UK’s exclusive hotel created for sufferers of life-limiting illnesses

The seaside resort of Bournemouth is the idyllic setting to escape from the world for a while. For Cancer sufferers, often that is exactly what is required, taking their mind off their illness and getting away for a short, well-deserved break. With first class care in mind, The Grove Hotel in Bournemouth has recently been launched, serving as the UK’s only hotel of its kind exclusively for use by sufferers of Cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Previously, Albany Lodge was launched to serve this market, and had been running for over 25 years. However, with growing demand, the Albany was no longer able to cope with the demands, so a new and even more charming site needed to be found, resulting in the launch of The Grove.

Situated on Bournemouth’s leafy East Cliff, and just minutes away from the town’s famous 7 miles of golden beaches, The Grove Hotel was created as a haven offering a week or two away from the tough business of getting well, and simply focuses on recuperation and relaxation. During their stay, guests of the hotel will enjoy evenings of entertainment arranged by the hotel and exceptional dining laid on by their team of talented chefs, who are entirely mindful and trained to deal with any specific dietary requirements which are products of the guests’ illnesses.

To the delight of guests, The Grove has a dedicated beach hut in a prime location so that guests can take advantage of the sunshine in the ultimate comfort. To enhance their stay, complimentary coach tours are arranged by the Hotel to allow guests to explore the surrounding areas of the New Forest and the Purbeck and Jurassic coast.

Given its focus on healthcare, The Grove has a duty nurse available 24 hours a day. They are on hand to offer guidance and support and to arrange any services that they may require. The Grove is owned and operated by Macmillan Caring Locally based in Christchurch Dorset, whose aim is to support people suffering from cancer and other life threatening illnesses, as well as members of their family and carers. As the hotel is a registered charity, they welcome support and donations to help them provide outstanding breaks for their guests.

General Manager of The Grove Hotel, Brenden Howard, spoke about the idea behind the property: “Our aim was to create the UK’s leading hotel exclusively for sufferers of life-threatening diseases. Of course, we welcome their family or carers to join them at the hotel which will hopefully enhance their stay. We strive to offer a serenely peaceful and enriching holiday, whilst offering the highest level of service and care.”

Hotel guest, Gillian Burr, commented on her stay: “The staff at The Grove are just wonderful – nothing is too much trouble for them! The food was also fantastic – such a lovely variety every day! This is exactly what I needed to take my mind off things for a week, and I cannot wait for my next holiday here.”

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts signs management agreement with Donnington Grove Country Club

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, the UK's largest privately owned hotel operator with over forty 4 and 5 star hotels throughout the UK and Spain, has further increased its market presence by signing a management contract with the owner of Donnington Grove Country Club in Newbury, Berkshire.

The agreement gives Macdonald Hotels & Resorts management control of the prestigious 18th century, 32 bedroom hotel, renowned for the quality of its conference, championship golf, fishing and clay pigeon facilities.

The owners, Sandtrend Ltd, retain the management of the pro shop, golf and estate pursuits.

Offering guests spectacular views from the hotel, the River Lambourn runs through 550 acres of the picturesque estate comprised of woodland and mature parkland.

The current staff will be retained in the deal that means Macdonald Hotels & Resorts now manage the country club hotel on behalf of the current owners.

The terms of the agreement will also see the Donnington Grove Country Club retain its own brand identity while Macdonald Hotels & Resorts will steadily implement its hotel-wide operational practices, controls and quality standards.

Referring to the arrangement, Chris Gillett, Managing Director, Macdonald Hotels Management Services Ltd, commented: "Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is very pleased to have agreed a management contract with this wonderful Hotel & Country Club.

"This agreement will further strengthen our portfolio along the M4 corridor and appeal to our discerning business, leisure and conference guests who seek the reassurance and quality of product and service offered by Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.

"Nigel Green, the general manager of the Donnington Grove Country Club and a former employee of Macdonald Hotels is familiar with our high professional standards. As a company we now look forward to supporting Nigel and his staff in further developing the potential of this beautifully appointed country house hotel."

The Gothic styled house dates back to 1763.  Overlooked by Donnington Castle, the original mansion house was built by James Pettit - Andrews. Following its sale to William Brummell in 1783, the house was transformed into a country estate.

The property was requisitioned in 1940 for Allied Supplies Ltd.  In the 1990's, Dave Thomas, one of Britain's foremost golf architects was tasked with creating a golf course in keeping with the listed landscape gardens. The construction of the course started in November 1991 and on the 12 June 1993 the Donnington Grove Country Club opened. Sandtrend Ltd purchased the estate in 2004.

The Radisson Blu Birmingham turns six in style

The Radisson Blu Hotel, Birmingham, a landmark hotel in the heart of the city centre, has celebrated its sixth anniversary in style, with over 100 guests enjoying an Italian themed party at the hotel.

Many of Birmingham's finest, including the Lord Mayor Councillor Anita Ward, were on hand to share in the celebrations of one of the city's premier hotels.

In tribute to the popular movie 'The Italian Job', guests were greeted on arrival by blue, red and white Mini’s at the hotel’s entrance. Super stylish Lambretta and Vespa scooters were loaned to the hotel to further celebrate and embrace all things Italian. Inside the party, guests entertained themselves on Formula One stimulators, testing their mettle behind the wheels of a Ferrari in a Top Gear-style "Filini challenge". Meanwhile, Amore Voce, the Italian pop-opera singers with a name that translates as "love voice", provided the evening's entertainment with some striking sounds.

The Italian flavour continued through the food and beverages on offer for guests, with Jonathan Parnell, Head Chef of 'Filini', the hotel's authentic Italian restaurant in Birmingham, serving up delicious treats including homemade pizza, mini risottos and selections of Italian breads and olives.

Christopher Pike, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Hotel, Birmingham, said: "We are all extremely excited to be celebrating our 6th year of business in the city and it is great to be able to celebrate in style with so many of our valued guests and clients, it has been a great six years with some challenges along the way but we are extremely proud to be here and look forward to many more successful years in this wonderful city,"

One happy chap at the end of the evening was the lucky winner of the hotels Formula One "Filini Challenge" who achieved the fastest recorded lap on the Formula One Stimulators, in a hotly contested competition, winning a VIP stay in the hotel's impressive Presidential Suite in the process.

Hotels outside London. Why not launch an Olympic Getaway package?

The perceived wisdom is that everyone is really excited about the Olympics and if they can't get tickets to any Olympic event (it doesn't matter which one, just so long as it is an Olympic sport!) will demand TV and radio coverage of all things London 2012 24/7.

It might be considered to be heretical to express this opinion but what about the rest of the population? What about those who might sneak the odd glance at a race, or who might follow the medal tally in a desultory fashion or even those who dislike how the Olympics takes over all broadcast channels, even when it is abroad, let alone in Britain?

If you own a hotel or a guesthouse outside of London, why not launch an Olympic Getaway Package?

You could make sure to have TV channels available that do not cover the Olympics, organise tours of the local beauty spots, visits to country pubs or other watering holes that do not have TV, etc.

Choice Hotels' survey reveals mixed views on whether hotels outside London will benefit from this summer’s events

Choice Hotels Europe, the company behind the Comfort, Quality and Clarion brands, has revealed the findings of its hotelier survey into which hotels are most likely to benefit from the games in London this summer.

The survey was conducted amongst 30 UK-based Choice Hotels owners, operators and general managers and just over half (51%) believe that all UK hotels will benefit from the increased inbound tourism expected in the summer. However, 29% think only hotels in London will benefit, while 18% believe that the games won't bring any benefits at all to hotels outside the M25.

Duncan Berry, UK CEO, Choice Hotels Europe commented: "Our survey reveals mixed views on whether hotels across the whole of the UK will see a benefit from the inbound tourism expected from the games."

Earlier this year Choice announced the opening of the Comfort Inn Hyde Park, bringing the number of Choice-branded hotels in London to eighteen. Other Choice-branded properties well-positioned for easy access to venues include Quality Hotel Coventry city centre (football) and Quality Hotel Reading (rowing).

Choice Hotels Europe franchises nearly 500 hotels across Europe alone. Brands operated by Choice Hotels in Europe include Clarion which could be described as four-star, Quality, which sits in the three-star bracket and provides a mid-scale full service offering and Comfort, the largest Choice Hotels brand worldwide, known for value and reliability.

Rezidor expects the Radisson Blu Resort & Congress Hotel, Sochi to be a year-round destination. In summer, the nearby beaches will beckon sun-starved Russian families. In winter, Sochi's soon -to-be famous ski slopes will be within easy reach via a planned high-speed rail and during spring and autumn the hotel's substantial congress centre will accommodate conferences, delegations and other events. The hotel is already under construction and the opening in early 2013 will allow one year of preparation before the Winter Olympics.

Sochi is currently undergoing a major transformation from a regional tourist hub into a global tourism destination. Massive development is underway to improve the infrastructure and create new and modern attractions, including theme parks, stadiums and enhanced ski facilities.

Sochi's main stadium will also host the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals. With such ambitious plans, the Sochi area has become a focus for Rezidor's business development and the group is already operating the Radisson Lazurnaya Hotel, Sochi. Signed projects under development include two ski resorts in nearby Rosa Khutor (Radisson and Park Inn by Radisson), and two Park Inn by Radisson hotels in the city center of Sochi.
