Top Five Winter Holiday Destinations Revealed

The top foreign holiday destinations revealed based on car rental bookings this winter, compiled by car hire specialist carhiremarket.com

Tenerife and Geneva are shaping up to be the most visited destinations for Brits looking for a winter break, according to leading car hire comparison site carehiremarket.com. Based on car hire bookings to date for December 2011 and January 2012, fly drive holidays look set to be most popular in the largest of the sunny Canary Islands, Tenerife, and with holiday makers on the hunt for snow from the Swiss city of Geneva.

The other destinations in the top five prove that much needed winter sun is rather important to us chilly Brits, with the southern city of Faro in Portugal and Cape Town in South Africa also popular for car hire holidays. In addition, a pint of warming festive Guinness looks to be a draw, with the capital of Northern Ireland, Belfast, making it into the top five.

Compared to bookings during the winter months of 2010, it looks like popular destinations such as Spain and Greece are falling off the top of the league table. Palma de Majorca won first prize with Malaga and Alicante coming second and third in 2010. However, perhaps us Brits are becoming more adventurous with winter trips, leaving the summery Sangria and ancient Greek architecture behind.

“With forecasters warning of another big freeze this winter with Siberian temperatures and widespread snow, it’s no wonder that many Brits are looking to take to the skies and fly off to sunnier climes,” commented Andrew Shorrock, Product Manager at leading car rental comparison site carhiremarket.com. “Although snowy Geneva is popular, our other top destinations offer hotter temperatures and winter sun and so far it looks like Brits are being a bit more adventurous in their choice of holiday.

We've already had lots of bookings from people looking for a winter getaway, who see the benefit of receiving great deals by getting car hire sorted well in advance. As the demand for winter fly-drive holidays starts to pick up, getting online and booking your car hire early will certainly help prevent disappointment, whether you are looking for sun and sand or a week on the slopes."

Europcar locations set to open 7 days a week with 24 hour opening to be launched at 6 key airports

Europcar has announced that from September 2011, busy travellers can benefit from 7-day opening at over 60 Europcar locations across the UK, letting them pick-up and return hire vehicles on the day that suits them, even if it's a Sunday.

"Conventionally, the car hire market comes to a halt for the weekend after 1pm on Saturdays," explained Ken McCall, Managing Director, Europcar Group UK. "So customers either have to use an out of hours service or take another day's hire, which is not always convenient and adds to the cost. And this is pretty inconvenient for customers who are used to accessing most other consumer and retail services 7 days a week. Therefore we are extending the opening hours of these key locations to make hiring a car even more convenient for our customers."

As Europe's leader in flexible car hire services for both leisure and business users, Europcar is the first car hire provider to open seven days a week at many of its UK locations, setting the benchmark for improving the car hire experience. It is also launching 24 hour opening at six key airports, offering customers access to quality car hire whenever they need it.

McCall continued: "We want to ensure that car hire fits in with our customer's needs, by offering as much choice and flexibility as possible. By extending our opening hours at more than 60 locations to cover the entire weekend and at key airports staying open 24/7, we are offering the most adaptable car hire product possible. This is an exciting initiative for us and we think it is great news for our customers."

From September 2011, Europcar will be operating 7 day car hire across 60 locations, including 22 airports and 38 city centre branches, as well as 24 hour car hire operating at six major airports. The remaining 128 locations, including airports, will be open 6 days a week, 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, with 7-day openings in these remaining locations being rolled out to respond to customer needs.

"We have been trialling extended opening hours at selected locations over the last few months, with considerable success," added Ken McCall. "It therefore made perfect sense to roll out this service to more locations.

"Once again, Europcar is setting the standard by delivering a service that meets the changing needs of our customers, helping them save time and enjoy quality, flexible car hire that suits their busy lifestyle."

Europcar offers the most flexible pick up and drop off locations and services in the UK, utilising an outstanding fleet including vans, family and prestige vehicles. Europcar will be the largest car hire company in the UK to have branches open on Sundays, reflecting its position at the forefront of the car hire market.

Car Hire Problems – Carrentals.co.uk tells You How to Avoid Them

With summer on the doorstep and many people booking their holidays in the sun, Carrentals.co.uk, reputedly the UK's top car rental comparative site, has put together a list of the ten most common faults people run into when booking a hire car.

Said Carrentals.co.uk's MD, Gareth Robinson: “For travellers hiring a car on holiday for their added convenience, it's surprising how many fall foul of easily avoided mishaps, like documentation, credit card limits and understand insurance policies.

“We have created a list of the ten most common mistakes renters can make, which will hopefully help people understand what not to do when renting a car, and so have a safer and more enjoyable trip.”

The Top 10 car rental problems by Carrentals.co.uk

1. Cheap Rentals – Opting for the cheapest car is not always good value for money. If you struggle to fit your holidaymaker friends and family in it, there isn't much point in renting it. By booking early you can a larger range of cars to choose from, such as SUVs and people carriers.

2. Insurance Policy Mishaps – Total Damage Excess Waiver is one such insurance policy that covers you for the windscreen, excesses, roof, the underside and tyres. Many people aren't covered for the wheels or windscreen, he two things that are most likely to be damaged.

3. Record any damage – Before leaving the rental car park, check the car for damage and have a representative record the damage. If new damage is found and you haven't checked it, you could well be liable for it.

4. Don't forget the extras – If you're travelling to a cold country then opt for snow tyres or snow chains. One of the most common mistakes is not to add a sat nav or child seat into the car, which are sometimes not available on the day of pick up.

5. Limited credit card – Always check what the damage excess is from the hire company before handing over your credit card. If you haven't got the funds available if you have an accident the hire car company could refuse to rent you the car.

6. Book early to avoid disappointment – The cost of car rental can rise the longer you leave it. It's best to book ahead to take advantage of offers and to ensure the car of your choice will be available.

7. Take the insurance – If you're offered insurance when you collect the car, make sure you're already covered at the time of when your bought the policy. In some cases if you take additional cover you might find you're covered twice.

8. Documentation check – In some countries you must show the return flight ticket, and usually credit card, passport and full driving license (both parts), before a renter will allow you to take the car. In some cases, people forget these vital documentation and are refused rental.

9. Rules of the road – Not all road rules are the same as in the UK, so it's important to read up about driving in that particular country before setting off. For example, roundabouts in Turkey give way to those joining it, not the other way around.

10. Fuelling the hire car – some rental car companies prefer you to leave a full tank of fuel or for it to remain empty on its return. Make sure you understand which one as you could find yourself being overcharged. Also, make sure you know if it takes petrol or diesel as getting these two mixed up can have catastrophic affects on the engine.
