Door2Tour.com has revealed the 'staycation' might be making a comeback. The latest figures from the tour operator have shown sales of UK breaks have increased by approximately 9% compared to the same period last year. This has been put down to the UK being under the spotlight during 2012.
There are a variety of factors causing this resurgence in UK breaks with the main one being the UK playing host to some top events during 2012 such as the Queens Diamond Jubilee, The Olympics, the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic and the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth. Other popular events drawing in the crowds are the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Ascot Ladies Day.
It's not just events that are proving to be a hit for people choosing to take their break in the UK in 2012, VisitEngland have recently launched a campaign showcasing the advantages of taking a 'staycation' instead of heading abroad. The campaign draws on the benefits of avoiding the hassle of passport control, lengthy queues to check-in at airports, poor exchange rates and the risk that travellers' suitcases may not arrive at their destination - which happened to many when London Gatwick suffered a power failure earlier this month and the baggage conveyors did not work. The 2012 campaign has got thousands of fantastic offers to make holidaying at home more affordable than ever this year.
With all the focus pointing towards London during 2012, short breaks to the UK’s capital city remain popular with holidaymakers. Latest figures from Door2Tour.com have shown a 63% rise in sales for London city breaks and this does not include sales of London theatre breaks that have also risen in popularity. Many believe that the 'Royal Effect' has also had a positive impact on the popularity of UK breaks and coach holidays in England with interest in the Royal Family reaching new heights after The Royal Wedding. Sales for Door2Tour coach holidays to Buckingham Palace, its gardens and of course Windsor Castle have risen steadily in popularity. Traditional seaside favourites are also making a comeback with resorts such as Blackpool, Bognor Regis, Scarborough and Great Yarmouth all seeing a rise in hotel bookings.
Rachel Jones, Online PR and Marketing Co-ordinator for Door2Tour.com commented: "Our figures have shown that although the credit crunch is still affecting many of our customers, it has not dampened their spirits where holidays are concerned. It just means that for 2012, most will be shopping around for the best deal for their money. Europe is still a temptation for holidaymakers simply because of its guarantee of sun, sea and sand. In 2011, many people who chose to have a 'staycation' were probably let down because of the typical British weather and are more determined than ever to seek out that summer sunshine in 2012. Let's hope that with all the focus on the UK and the possibility of a beautiful summer, people will be persuaded that holidaying at home is the far better option this year."

Men head to Med whilst women stay with friends for big Olympic rent-out
A recent survey conducted by holiday home specialists Owners Direct has revealed that 50% of Brits in the South East who plan to, or have already rented out their homes for the Olympics games are looking to escape the UK for a Mediterranean break.
Owners Direct has also seen almost a 90% rise in enquiries during 2012 to date for the London area and an 80% increase for surrounding areas such as Essex.
And the sexes have been divided. Whilst more men said they’d go abroad while they rented out their property, more women said they’d bunk with friends. Either way, 40% of home owners surveyed said they would be or have already rented out their main residence for the weeks in July and August during which the games take place.
As a result of increased demand for properties near the Olympic sites next summer, Owners Direct have launched a service specifically to cater to the needs of those looking for short term let options. Launched at the end of October last year, it offers landlords a cost effective way to market their homes to people all over the world who are looking for accommodation during the Olympics.
Owners Direct advisers home owners to make sure they do their research before renting out their home.
“We’ve seen a huge increase in demand for properties in the London area and our advice for people considering renting out a holiday property or even their own home would be to ensure that you make it clear to prospective tenants what you are offering within the price – are you providing linen and towels, a welcome pack or any other added extras? Before renting your London property, make sure that you have the relevant insurance required and check that your local council allows short term letting. Once you receive a booking always confirm the booking with a written contract” says Owners Direct Marketing Manager Angela Southall.
46 year old Rochelle Peachey who runs transatlantic dating site www.iloveyouraccent.com and her husband secured a booking last October for their four bedroom semi in the Woodford Green area to a Russian family for a total of four weeks during the Olympics and Paralympics.
“We are super close to everything and the opportunity was too good to pass up. I might send my mother in law on a cruise so we can stay in their flat but something more exotic is calling my name – California maybe!”
With over 50% of people who took part in the study who own a holiday home in the South East already having received enquiries for the 2012 games, Marketing Manager Angela Southall said the company was keen to extend their offering to people who didn’t need to list their properties for a long period of time.
“We have launched a service that will allow homeowners who wouldn’t normally rent out their properties to do so for a short time. We’ve been amazed at how many people are willing to pack up their lives and find a roof elsewhere for a few weeks!” says Angela Southall.
Of those who are renting out their homes or are planning to, the majority are of the 35-54 age group. With options to take a holiday, move in with friends and family or rent elsewhere, some have said they would happily crash on a mate’s sofa or hole up in a converted shed or garage with 30% looking at such options. As well as the Med, popular destinations included Northern Europe and America.
The majority of enquiries regarding rental properties are coming from within the UK, with Brits who were lucky enough to get tickets looking to stay close by and make a holiday of the event. The UK was followed by the USA and France.

Holiday rentals company onefinestay unveils its 300th stylish London home
Greg Marsh, onefinestay’s CEO and co-founder, says “This is a period of rapid growth for us. The company’s success has proven that people with beautiful homes are keen to have guests to stay in them while they’re away. Reaching this milestone of 300 homes is a great achievement for the onefinestay team, adding further anticipation around our international launch announcement later this year.”
onefinestay redefines the experience of visiting London: live like a local by staying in a distinctive home while the owner is out of town, with a service which offers all the convenience and comfort of a hotel. Guests enjoy luxury amenities like 5* hotel linens and toiletries from The White Company as standard.
Every guest is also loaned an iPhone for the duration of their stay which is filled with local tips and helpful videos recorded by the home’s owner, and from which they can make free local calls. Members benefit by earning an income from a house or flat which would otherwise sit vacant, without the risk or hassle associated with alternatives like holiday rentals or short term letting.
There are now 300 homes to choose from, at prices which range from £150 a night for a comfortable one bedroom apartment in Marylebone W1, to over £1,000 a night for a grand townhouse in South Kensington. Other stylish options available through onefinestay include a historic stay in St. Pancras Chambers, a four bedroom family home in Hampstead, a bachelor pad in trendy Shoreditch and a palatial home in luxurious Knightsbridge. This service suits everyone - from regular business travellers to London, couples seeking a more authentic experience, and families with children looking for the comforts of a real home.
onefinestay's early success was spotted by leading European venture capital firm Index Ventures which led a $3.7m funding round. Other angel investors include Brent Hoberman, co-founder & CEO of Lastminute.com, Andy Phillipps, co-founder of ActiveHotels, and other leading figures from the travel and hospitality community.

Enjoy England as a touist destination of Firsts in the World
England has a long history of innovation and over the years it has paved the way for the rest of the world in several industries. As well as being home to the world’s first motorcar and being the first ground of several of the world’s first sports, England has also led the way in tourism.
With the first ever English Tourism Week taking place this week (10th – 18th March), VisitEngland takes a look back at some of the country’s tourism contributions that have shaped how we holiday today.
First Afternoon Tea
The tradition of taking Afternoon Tea is said to have been started at Woburn Abbey by the wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, Duchess Anna Maria, during the 1840s. The Duchess felt that taking tea and delicate sandwiches, cakes and biscuits bridged the long gap between luncheon and dinner. We couldn’t agree more. Today, afternoon tea is still our preferred way to break up the afternoon, meet friends, or celebrate – and it is still served in traditional form in the Duchess’ tea room at Woburn Abbey. £12.50 per person. www.woburn.co.uk/abbey
First Stamp
What goes around the world and stays in a corner? The answer… a postage stamp, and the first method of pre-paying to send mail in a convenient way was invented right here in England. The first stamp in the world was posted from Bath in May 1840. The Penny Black officially came into use on 6th May 1840 and was sold in 1990 for £55,000. To learn more about England’s postal history, visit Bath Postal Museum. Adults: £3.50, Child over 6: £1.50.

First Pier
Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight is thought to be the oldest pier in the world. Built in 1813 and opened in 1814, the pier certainly made the experience of coming ashore more pleasant than being carried on a porter’s back or walking half a mile through wet sand in your fineries. The pier has recently been renovated to preserve its Victorian heritage and today is home to the Wightlink catamaran service between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde. Return crossing on the Catamaran from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde is £16.

First Flight
2010 marked the 1,000 year anniversary of the first flight, when Brother Eilmer, an 11th century Benedictine monk, attached wings to his arms and legs and attempted man’s first recorded flight. He jumped off Malmesbury Abbey tower in Wiltshire and managed a downward glide of some 200 metres. You could say this was the precursor to Hang Gliding. To learn more about aviation, visit the flight gallery at the Science Museum in London, which is brimming over with extraordinary exhibits reflecting both British and international achievements in aviation. Entry is free but charges apply for the IMAX cinema, flight simulators and some special exhibitions.

First Deckchairs
Englishman John Thomas Moore, the man who bought the deckchair to world, took out a patent for an adjustable folding chair made of wood and fabric in 1886. Mass production of the deckchair started in Macclesfield in Cheshire, before becoming part of the furniture on ocean liners travelling all over globe - including the doomed Titanic. They became - and still are - an essential part of British piers, beaches, promenades, cricket grounds and back gardens. Beer beach in Devon is a picturesque beach with striped deckchairs and charming beach huts. Head out mackerel fishing, or simply recline in a deck chair for the afternoon and watch the world go by…

First Package Holiday
It was a 32-year old cabinet-maker named Thomas Cook who pioneered the very first package holiday back in 1841, when he organised a rail journey from Leicester to Loughborough to allow 500 people to attend a temperance meeting on July 5th that year. During the next three summers, Thomas arranged a succession of trips between Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham on behalf of local temperance societies and Sunday schools. His first commercial venture took place in the summer of 1845, when he charged patrons to join an organised a trip to Liverpool. Today, Thomas Cook is the UK’s largest retailer of breaks on home turf, as well as being the official provider of short breaks to the London 2012 Olympic Games and providing more trips to UK sports events than anyone else.

First Hard Rock Café
You can go all around the world from Aruba to Sharm El Sheikh and find a Hard Rock Café. But if you want to find the original, head to Old Park Lake in London. In June 2011, the Café celebrated its 30th birthday; the brainchild of Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton, the central London restaurant offered first-rate American food, a fascinating collection of memorabilia with live music. Still housing the first ever piece of memorabilia donated to Hard Rock Café, Eric Clapton’s Lead II Fender – originally donated to reserve a space at the busy bar – the London café today is as authentic and popular as ever.

Stylish Staycations In South West Wales
North Beach Tenby (www.northbeachtenby.com), the collective name for two luxurious, contemporary apartments in the picturesque beach resort of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, is offering stylish staycations from £650 per week for a family four (or even five) in 2012.
One of Britain’s most popular coastal resorts in Victorian times, Tenby remains a great destination for a traditional family seaside holiday.
The town has three wide, sandy beaches (North, South and Castle), totalling 2.5 miles in length, all of which have been awarded Blue Flag status (guaranteeing excellent water quality and beach facilities, such as public loos and lifeguards).
Other outdoor activities include hiking the coastal trail, windsurfing, sea kayaking, golfing and boat trips for pure pleasure or a spot of fishing.
If – heaven forbid – it should rain, there is plenty for families to do that is mainly indoors, such as visit Silent World Aquarium & Reptile Collection, Blue Lagoon Water Park & Adventure Centre, Anna Ryder Richardson’s Manor House Wildlife Park, Folly Farm, the Pottery Shed Café or Caldey Island, all of which are in or just outside Tenby.
Alternatively, guests can return to North Beach Tenby, get the log-burning stoves going and snuggle down in front of the TV or around a family board game. Created from a Regency townhouse, the two-bedroom apartments have sensational views overlooking North Beach and the Pembrokeshire coast, and are well located in the heart of Tenby, just a few minutes’ walk from all the old town’s attractions – shops, cafes, restaurants, medieval walls, National Trust property and, of course, the town’s beaches.
Both apartments accommodate four, each having a double room with an ensuite shower, a twin room and a bathroom with shower, but an additional single bed can be supplied on request at no extra charge to sleep a fifth person. Spacious living spaces have separate cooking, eating and dining areas. The fully-fitted kitchens have every amenity, including ovens, dishwasher and washing machines, while the living areas come complete with flat-screen TVs and DVD players and log-burning stoves. The apartments also come with off-street parking and use of a kayak, subject to availability.
A week’s holiday at North Beach Tenby costs from £650 per apartment in February (perfect for half-term holidays), including use of linens, full cleaning service and the provision of logs for the stoves. In April, during the Easter school holidays, a week’s stay is priced at £750 and in the summer, from £900 per week. Shorter stays are possible, but are subject to a minimum two-night stay and availability.
Reservations can be made through the website www.northbeachtenby.com.

10 Romantic European Villa and City Apartment Ideas for Couples from The Villa Book
1. Paris … well, we had to start with Paris… the ultimate romantic destination, and what could be more romantic than staying at Le Bateau, a houseboat on the Seine, almost at the foot of the Eiffel Tower! Accessed by a tree-lined, cobblestone quai, there are expansive views of the Seine and the Beaux-Arts architecture of Passy from its deck-terrasse, where you can sit and enjoy a morning coffee or cocktail in the evening. The interiors are exceptionally spacious (800 sq. ft) and comfortable, with polished wood panelled walls and floorboards and a king-size bed in the cosy bedroom. The boat is equipped with TV and wi-fi internet connection, and there are two bicycles available for exploring Paris. Nearby sights include a twice weekly open-air market, a good selection of restaurants and cafés and, of course, the numerous historical sites in this fascinating part of Paris.
Guide price: €2170 per week.
2. Venice is another personal favourite, and of all the places we have ever stayed in Venice, there is nowhere quite like Le Residenze for a truly memorable romantic break. Situated on Giudecca Island, directly facing San Marco across the lagoon, Le Residenze dates back to the 16th century when it was the home of a Venetian noble family. It has recently been renovated, retaining all its original grandeur, including wall frescoes and Venetian terrazzo floors, to create 11 superb apartments, a reading room and wine bar with working fireplaces and an impressive ‘winter garden’ lobby. The latter opens both to the front of the building and views of San Marco, and to the rear where there is a stunning three acre private garden, with swimming pool. Among the many guest privileges is the use of the adjoining Palladio’s Spa, as well as complimentary boat transfers (a 4 minute ride) to Piazza San Marco.
Guide price: €1200 per night. Minimum stay 4 nights.
3. When asked to recommend romantic breaks, apart from the cities like Paris and Venice, we always immediately think of Santorini, and any time from Easter to the end of October is a great time to go, maybe avoiding the crowded high season months of July and August, if it is a romantic break you are after! And of course, you must make sure you stay in a villa with a Caldera view … somewhere like the aptly named Fira Dream would be perfect. Perched high on a clifftop above the spectacular Caldera, this 17th century ‘canava’ has been refurbished to the highest of standards, yet without losing its traditional, simple Cycladic style. Access is via a courtyard into a large living area with high vaulted ceilings. From here, a handmade stained glass door leads to the master bedroom with circular bed and a Jacuzzi set with mosaic glass tiles. The villa has two terraces, one with rooftop jacuzzi, to take full advantage of the breathtaking views and sunsets. The village centre of Fira with a great selection of bars and tavernas, some again in magnificent cliffside locations, is just a few minutes walk away. Airport transfers and a continental breakfast each morning are included in the rental price.
Guide price: €340 per night. Minimum stay 3 nights.
4. The Greek Islands offer so much in the way of romantic properties, you are spoilt for choice, but Petra Villa on Patmos, recently added to our programme, did catch our attention as being an idyllic retreat for a quiet, romantic break. The villa dates back to 1542 and is one of the oldest houses in the traditional village of Chora, known as one of the most picturesque villages in Greece, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its maze of narrow, cobbled streets and white-washed houses, cars will need to be left in a car park at the entrance to the village, from where it is a 5 minute walk to the villa. Quaint and charming , the interiors are furnished with antiques, yet offer all modern comforts, including air conditioning, wi-fi access and home cinema. A traditional patio at ground floor level is furnished with a large marble dining table, sofas and chairs, while a furnished roof terrace right at the top of the house, has amazing views to the sea and the famous Monastery of St John.
Guide price: €800 per night (can request special rates out of high season for just one couple). Minimum stay 3 nights.
5. If asked to suggest a totally unique and extraordinary out of season romantic break, by the sea, in Europe, we would have no hesitation in suggesting the magnificent Palazzo Santa Croce in Positano. Situated high above the town (about 10 - 15 minutes walk down to the town centre and beach), there are wonderful views over the picturesque town, the dramatic coastline and the sea. Dating from the 1700’s, the property has been wonderfully preserved and still features the original lacquered doors, painted ceilings and original stucco work. It also has a fascinating history of famous guests, including Picasso, Steinbeck and Alberto Moravia. The current owners have restored the building to all its former glory and more! It is rare to see such exquisite taste and attention to detail – the end result being a haven of relaxation, combined with enormous beauty and a true sense of the property’s history and culture. Among the many exceptional features are the two master bedrooms, with their frescoed ceilings, decorated and furnished in opulent Baroque style, with enormous paintings, columns, mirrors and silks. There is a large terrace, furnished for relaxing and dining outdoors (and with a long hydro-massage tub!) and, on a lower level, a luxurious spa, with heated pool, with fountain and contra-flow jets for lumbar and cervical massages. Breakfast is served each morning with juice squeezed from the property’s own lemon and orange trees, home-made marmalade and home-baked pastries….. don’t be put off by the price of such perfection – the owners will reduce the price for couples staying. And if the romantic break leads to a wedding, there is even a consecrated chapel!
Prices on request. Usually one week minimum stay, but shorter stays allowed out of high season.
6. While on the subject of Palazzos and Italy … there is always Rome to consider too. Here we are renting a luxurious and unique apartment in a 16th century Palazzo, right in Via Condotti, one of Rome’s finest shopping streets, and a 5 minute walk from the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. Steeped in history, and one the residences of Emperor Napoleon III, who lived here in 1830, the one bedroom apartment has been restored to all its former splendour. Entrance to the Palazzo is through massive wooden doors and along an arcade of Doric columns with ancient artefacts on display. Guests can reach the apartment by elevator, or by the grand marble staircase lined with antique busts of Roman emperors. The apartment (about 2350 sq. ft) has parquet floors, hand-stencilled walls, antique furnishings, huge oil paintings and 16th century tapestries. One painting in the bedroom, opens to access an exquisite marble bathroom! This has to be one of the most amazing places to stay in Rome, and definitely on the short list of a very special occasion. Continental breakfast each morning is included in the price.
Guide price: €1500 per night. Minimum stay 3 nights.
7. If the idea of a Mediterranean Island appeals, offering sunshine and beauty out of high season, then our small villa, Pequena Deia, in the charming village of Deia on Mallorca might appeal. A former artists’ colony, Deia is a beautiful stone-clad village with no less than three Michelin star restaurants (and lots of other restaurants and tapas bars), art galleries, boutiques and fabulous sea views. There is even a small beach, two kilometres from the village, an 18-hole golf course 20 minutes away and Spa facilities at the nearby Residencia Hotel. Our very pretty, traditional stone house here is about 15 minutes walk from the village. Formerly a Priests’ sanctuary, the house retains its authentic charm, with white-washed walls, original exposed ceiling beams and painted wooden shutters. There is a terrace with swimming pool and sea views.
Guide price: €2275 per week. Minimum stay one week.
8. Also by the sea, and offering much in the way of authentic charm, is our Dubrovnik Apartment. It is hidden away in a quiet street, just steps away from Stradun, the main promenade in the old town. The Rector’s and Sponza Palaces, the Cathedral, St Blaise’s Church, Europe’s oldest pharmacy (housed with the Franciscan Monastery), Mariin Drzic Theatre, museums and art galleries are all within a short walk, as are Dubrovnik’s finest restaurants, cafés and the ferry to the beaches on romantic Lokrum Island…. a perfect base for exploring this captivating city. The interiors of the apartment are very tasteful with exposed stone walls, original ceiling beams and flooring, and an antique ‘Windof’, used for open fire cooking more than a hundred years ago. The apartment is equipped with all modern amenities and the owner can arrange for breakfast delivery for guests on request.
Guide price: €250 per night. Minimum stay 4 nights.
9. St Tropez is fabulous out of high season, and we have the perfect small villa, L’Escale Beach, right by the sea, for couples looking for peace and privacy, yet easy access to St Tropez village, just 15 minutes drive away. The pretty bougainvillea-filled garden at the front of the house has a heated pool, and direct beach access to L’Escalet Plage. There are two large covered terraces to relax or enjoy meals ‘al fresco’.
Price for 2 people out of high season on request. Minimum stay one week.
10. Last, but not least, London is also a great city for a romantic break and we are offering some very charming, quintessentially English-style apartments in an Edwardian building in Cadogan Gardens – just behind Sloane Square and a quick stroll away from the Kings Road, Sloane Street and Knightsbridge. The Draycott Apartments are part of a boutique hotel and guests will benefit from hotel facilities, including a 24 hour reception and room service. Additional thoughtful touches include complimentary tea and biscuits in the drawing room at 4 p.m., a glass of champagne at 6 p.m. and hot chocolate at 9.30 pm.! A stay here is really like a home away from home, in particularly relaxing, hospitable and luxurious surroundings.
Guide price: €325 per night. Minimum stay one night.

National Geographic Traveler (USA) is the world’s most widely read travel magazine. It championed sustainable travel before it was cool and, eight times annually, celebrates journeys that are about place, experience, culture, authenticity, living like the locals and great photography. It makes a distinction between tourism and travel and stresses inquisitive, not acquisitive, trips. It employs storytelling and you-are-there photography to inspire readers to pick up and go. And, with the theme of “All Travel, All the Time,” it eschews fashion and fluff in favour of articles that offer a strong sense of place, inspiring narratives that make readers take trips, and solid service information to help them plan those trips.
The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the Society’s mission is to inspire people to care about the planet. TV, Tap Water and Teabags join ‘My Own Bed’ in Britons Most Missed List When Abroad
19th December 2011 – As over four million Britons get set to jet off to sunnier climes during the festive season, it seems it’s not just the Queen’s speech and crisp winter mornings they will miss, according to a new survey by carhiremarket.com. Topping a list of what Britons miss the most when holidaying abroad is ‘their own bed’ (30%), followed by the convenience of tap water (17%).
The top five list of the most missed, revealed by the poll of over 2,000 British adults, also includes missing out on favourite TV programmes (8%) and not being familiar with our surroundings, with ‘knowing my way around’ coming in at number four (7%). A decent morning cuppa was also important to holiday makers, with ‘my own teabags’ making it into the top five (5%).
According to the poll, the Welsh seem to be a nation of home comfort lovers, with 40% saying they’d miss their own bed the most. Those from the East Midlands are most likely to be craving a good old cup of English tea (12% vs. 5% GB wide) and it appears that the true British pub lovers of the UK are located in the North West, as residents from here are more likely to miss their local pub when jetting off to another country (5% vs. 2% GB wide).
It’s the regular routine of the TV that those from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset areas miss more than any other region, with 13% of respondents in South West Britain saying they missed their favourite TV programmes when away - 5% above the national average.
Andrew Shorrock, Product Manager at an online car hire comparison site carhiremarket.com, comments: “Our survey really does show that no matter how appealing a hot and sunny destination might be, us Brits really do savour our home comforts. You simply can’t beat your own bed, a nice cup of tea or even your own car, according to 4% of men! However, if you are planning on heading overseas this Christmas, you can try and make every detail as much like home as possible, even by choosing a preference of hire car.”
Results below from the carhiremarket.com survey of what Brits missed most when holidaying abroad:
1. My own bed (30%)
2. Tap water (17%)
3. Favourite TV programmes (8%)
4. Knowing my way around (7%)
5. My usual teabags (5%)
6. My own car (3%)
7. Driving on the left hand side of the road (3%)
8. My local pub (2%)
9. None of these (25%)

Top Holiday and vacation trends for 2012
When all the turkey has been eaten, the last Christmas cracker pulled and 2011 starts to draw to a close, as well as New Year resolutions, people will start thinking about where to jet off to on their summer holidays. So where will the Great British public be heading in 2012 and what trends will we see in the travel market? Thomson and First Choice have put together their predictions of what the year ahead will have in store.
Booking trends
Although money will continue to be tight for many households, people will not be willing to forgo their annual break in the sun and would prefer to save in other areas. While still escaping to the sun, customers will be looking for quality breaks away in 2012, which are unique and offer great value for money.
First Choice expects more holidaymakers to select All Inclusive hotels next summer as people will be looking to have more control of their holiday budget. First Choice will become the Home of All Inclusive in 2012 as it becomes the first large tour operator to sell 100% All Inclusive holidays, so it should be the first port of call for anyone looking for this type of holiday.
The trend for flexibility will continue, as more holidaymakers will be looking for more 10 and 11 night holidays, as one week is too short or they are concerned about leaving their job for a full two weeks.
Thomson and First Choice also expect to see an increase in demand for their unique holiday concepts such as Sensatori, Couples, Families, Holiday Villages and SplashWorld, as Brits look to spend their hard earned cash on a holiday that can’t be found anywhere else.
Destinations
Traditional Mediterranean getaways are also tipped to be the top hot spots for Summer 2012. Brits will be flocking to book holidays to the Balearics and mainland Spain, which they know and trust. However, Thomson and First Choice also expect to see a surge in popularity for up and coming destinations like Cape Verde, Jamaica and Croatia. Mexico is also set to be a top choice for 2012, as it offers real luxury in a stunning location at good prices.
Cruising
There has also been a lot of speculation in the media about Libya having the potential to be a hot tourist spot in the future. Thomson Cruises agrees and it has already been scoping out itineraries that will include ports of call in Libya as well as Algeria and the Black Sea for Winter 2012/13.
Thomson Cruises also expects to see a very strong demand for cruises departing from the UK next year, particularly with “new to cruise” customers that prefer not to fly and from existing cruisers who live within close proximity to Harwich and Newcastle. It also predicts there will be a trend for more adventurous and unusual cruises as new and traditional cruisers want to visit some of the least discovered destinations in Europe and North Africa.
Where to go to in 2012
The Balearic Islands: Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza
Traditional Mediterranean destinations such as Menorca, Majorca, and Ibiza have always been a favourite holiday hotspot amongst Brits, and are continuing to become more popular as market volume continues to grow.
Menorca is the perfect spot for anyone looking for a beach holiday, as the island has more beaches than any other island in the Balearics, so there’s a huge emphasis on relaxation. Majorca has a great variety of things to do, whether it’s partying in Magaluf, or enjoying gorgeous tapas food in Palma, there’s something for everyone.
Ibiza to some may evoke images of wild nights out, however the island has a lot more to offer, such as white sand beaches, a beautiful countryside, and delicious fresh seafood. Thomson has introduced Thomson Family units in each of the Balearic Islands which are proving to be popular with customers with families. Thomson Family resorts are designed to keep the whole family happy, and every hotel in the collection has a 4T or 5T rating.
Thomson offers seven night family holidays to Menorca staying at the 4T Victoria Playa on an all inclusive basis, from £780 per person, with the first child from £465, and second child from £570. Price is based on a family of four sharing, and includes flights departing from London Gatwick airport on 22 August 2012 and transfers. Thomson offers seven night family holidays to Majorca staying at the 4T Aparthotel Alcudia Pins on an all inclusive basis, from £899 per person, with the first child from £570, and second child from £655. To find out more or to book this holiday visit www.thomson.co.uk or call 0871 231 5595.
Cape Verde
Cape Verde is a particularly new tourist destination but it’s already proving popular as Brits seek to discover these exotic islands. Cape Verde is made up of ten tiny islands, but the islands of Sal and Boa Vista are the most popular amongst holidaymakers. The islands are just off the west coast of Africa and comprise of an exotic mix of African, Brazilian, and Portuguese cultures. The secluded islands are natural, un-built upon and beautiful, and you’re guaranteed untouched white beaches.
RIU hotels are popular with customers travelling to Cape Verde, especially the 5T RIU Touareg.
New for the First Choice Summer 2012 programme is the 4Sun Oasis Salinas Seas, which is part of the First Choice Premier collection.

Thomson Cruises Ex-UK Cruises
For Summer 2012 Thomson Cruises has reintroduced cruises from the UK on Thomson Spirit. Based in Newcastle from May to July 2012 and Harwich in August and September 2012, customers can simply drive to the port, climb aboard and start enjoying their Thomson cruise without having to fly from the UK. Thomson Spirit will sail 16 different ex-UK itineraries, taking in 39 destinations and providing a great selection of 3-14 night cruises. Prices start from just £629 per person based on 2 adults travelling on the 6 night ‘Magic of the Fjords’ cruise from Harwich on 26th August 2012.
