“To Vacation or to Staycation?”… asks Thomson Holidays
Should I stay or should I go? That’s the question everyone who has yet to book their holidays for this summer is asking, especially as the poor UK weather seems set to outstay its welcome. There is a perception that choosing to holiday in the UK offers better value for money during this recession than a holiday abroad, when in actual fact the opposite can often be the case. With British operators promoting the benefits of staying at home by pushing the value for money message, Thomson is keen to show that there are still good bargains (and better weather!) to be had overseas.
Thomson operates a flexible business model which allows it to increase or decrease the amount of holidays it has available at any given time to suit market demand. Combined with its current summer sale, which offers £500 off per couple and free child places*, a holiday abroad is looking more than appealing when bench-marked against the costs of many UK holidays.
According to recent research by Santander credit cards, those holidaying in Britain this year face a peak season price increase of 39% for holidaying in mid august, versus mid-July. No one would dispute that the simple economics of supply and demand dictate price increases in the peak summer holiday season, but this figure compares to a relatively modest increase of 6% for holidays in Spain.** As an example of this, a week’s holiday at Centerparcs Longleat Forest, from 10th August 2009, currently costs from £1,946 for two adults and two children.*** This cost is for accommodation only. Compare this to a week’s package holiday in Majorca, staying at the 4T Hotel Rey Don Jaime, Santa Ponsa and departing from Manchester on the same day, which currently costs £1,799 for two adults and two children. This includes return flights, accommodation on a half board basis, in resort transfers and all taxes and charges.****
At a time when some are dismissing a holiday in the eurozone out of hand because of the current exchange rate, a recent survey by the Post Office demonstrates that such assumptions may be misplaced. For example, the cost of a family meal, based on two adults and two children, to include a bottle of wine and two soft drinks in a local restaurant, costs an average of £31.39 in Spain, in comparison to £57.85 in Brighton. Furthermore, taking into account the price of 10 staple holiday items such as a bottle of lager, a cup of tea and sun cream, the costs were 38% less in Spain than in Brighton.
Thomson has launched a new online late deal finder where customers can search for holidays by departure date, airport, duration and destination. Visit http://www.thomson.co.uk/late-deals/late-deals.html for more information.
Catriona Lougher, marketing director for Europcar, said: "We all want to get our holiday off to a good start and while rail is a great solution for many, the logistical issues of getting to and from the station with children and suitcases in tow can make for a fractious time. Weighed up with higher rail fares and the chance that engineering works often means travel in replacement buses – and car hire becomes an increasingly attractive option. For example, a family of four travelling from Bristol to Edinburgh could save around £600** on the price of a train fare, by opting to get a family car hire for the trip.
"Hiring a vehicle for some journeys not only offers substantial savings but the comfort, convenience and flexibility that rail travel struggles to offer."
Europcar offers customers free car hire delivery and collection from most of its 200+ locations across the UK through its weDeliver service ensuring a stress-free start to the holidays. In addition, Europcar’s Airport Connect service means holidaymakers can hire a vehicle from their local branch and leave it at the airport and then pick it up again at the end of their return flight. Airport Connect means travellers can wave goodbye to hauling luggage across town and dealing with train connections and stressful delays.
Europcar's service also helps customers avoid train delays, hefty fare increases and overcrowding. In addition, there are no worries over maintenance, 24 hour roadside assistance plus the fuel efficiencies of driving a relatively new vehicle suited to the journey and number of passengers.

Hens pull their horns in, stags do not!
Hotels.com and Wedding Ideas magazine found that stags continue to revel in a final fling of freedom as three quarters (74%) say their celebrations will last for a weekend or longer. Stay-at-home hens, meanwhile, are far more likely to economise as two-thirds (59%) say their pre-marital celebrations will only last one day.
Accordingly, the research found, stags are spending considerably more - parting with £179 each on average for each party they attend. Hens spend a more modest £118 on the celebration.
Stags are far more likely than their hen counterparts to venture beyond British shores for their celebration, with a third (32%) planning parties overseas. Of all stags polled, a quarter (27%) will head to European party destinations while another one-in-twenty (5%) will venture even further afield to the US or Canada. As a result, a number of the top stag do destinations were foreign cities: Prague (second), Amsterdam (third), Barcelona (fifth) and Tallinn (eighth) all feature in the top ten destinations for stags, although London retained the top spot. With many stag nights now going beyond one night and into a weekend, this saw a boost for London hotels last year.
At the other end of the scale, the vast majority (96%) of brides-to-be will celebrate in the UK and more than a quarter (28%) will not venture further than their home towns. In fact, only one foreign destination - the Spanish city of Barcelona - made it into the top 10 most popular locations for hen parties. Hens booking accommodation for their celebrations looked first to London, closely followed by Brighton, then Edinburgh hotels and accommodation in Devon, Cornwall and Bath.
Alison Couper, director of communications for Hotels.com says "Traditionally the wedding day is all about the bride, so it would seem that many grooms use their stag do as an opportunity to take share the limelight ahead of the big day."
Rachel Moschke, editor of Wedding Ideas magazine, said: "Most of us worry about keeping our wedding costs to a minimum, and brides are becoming increasingly conscious of what they ask their friends and family to pay for. The hen do is one area where brides feel like they need to keep their eye on the budget and are celebrating in the UK so there is more in the kitty for their big day."

Survey: What are YOU going to do on your holidays?
As a result, family experts First Choice are launching a brand new Splash programme featuring the very best holidays, perfect for those who love swimming. It features 13 fantastic properties situated in, or next to amazing water parks. A new advert to support the new brochure also airs today. The programme is brought to you by First Choice’s Cool Pool Tester Tommy Lynch, who was given the enviable task of trotting the globe trying out water rides and selecting the very best for inclusion in the portfolio.
As a result of his findings Tommy has rated each water park with his own Splashometer – giving marks out of ten for speed and thrill factor. The score out of 10 is a combination of how many body slides, speed slides, multi-lane slides, tube slides, feature slides, lazy rivers, wave pools and kids slides each hotel has.
We have created a logo for each type of slide and this sits on each hotel page. Tommy has put together his top tips for kids and ‘big kids’ alike, for making the most out of water rides this summer:
1) Know your slides. There are Boomerangoes, Masterblasters, Sidewinders, the Kamikaze…..There are so many different slides, all with something in common - they are great fun. The higher the faster, is the general rule. ‘Speed slides’ are the straight water slides – simple, but fast and furious that will fire your down to the ground at the speed of light.
2) Some rides that look gentle, can sometimes be the most exhilarating. My favourite is ‘the Bowl’ looks innocent enough, but it really feels like you are being washed down a plug hole! Not for the faint hearted.
3) Gentlemen, don your Speedos! Lightweight swim shorts will always make you go faster than long baggy swim shorts which will drag you back.
4) Ladies, chose your bikini wisely if you want to spare your blushes. I’ve seen many a red face and floating bikini top at the bottom of water rides. Bikinis tied held together by bows are simply just not going to survive the ride.
5) Sun cream is of course an absolute must in waterparks in the summer. But apply extra on the backs of your legs and back for extra speed.
6) For maximum speed lie back with your head slightly raised and arms folded across your chest – you will be more streamlined like a torpedo.
7) On fast slides, extend your legs but cross them at your knees. You’ll go faster and it will also prevent the common condition known as ‘the wedgie’!
8) If all this speed gets too much and you want to relax and top up your tan, the lazy river is the perfect way to pass the day. Lie on your inflatable and watch the world go by as you enjoy these go-slow rivers
9) Little ones don’t need to be left out. Tots love the water and most water parks have lazy rivers, tots slides, tipping water buckets and splashy-splashy playgrounds.
10) Finally, be safe: Always read the rules and directions. Listen to the water park supervisors, always check the person before you has cleared the splash pool before you set off, and always apply very high factor sun cream regularly.
Prices for Splash holidays start from £325 per adult and £169 per child staying at the Grand Ucel in Ovacik, Turkey on a bed and breakfast basis for seven nights departing on Monday 10th May 2010 departing from Gatwick.

M&S Travel Money reports families are tipping too much on holiday
The survey by M&S Travel Money found that almost 40% of British holidaymakers don't familiarise themselves with expected gratuities and customs before they travel and as a result will regularly hand out unnecessary amounts of cash in tips which can add up to as much as 30% of their total holiday spending funds.
The research found that:
- One in six Brits believe it is customary to tip in Japan - a country where tipping is actually deemed highly insulting
- 39% of British women admit they don't know where tipping rules do and don't apply vs 28% men
- 55+ is the age group least informed about tipping expectations and as a results are the most likely to find themselves out of pocket
- 1 in 10 Britons finds themselves 'caught short' with less spending money than anticipated due to an oversight regarding tips
James Yerkess, M&S Travel Money Manager and author of the brand's newly launched online Tip Advisor Guide, said: "Whilst the eyes of cash conscious holidaymakers are eagerly scouring for the best holiday deals, this new research exposes a significant and forgotten holiday cost factor.
"Most British families don't consider the additional cost of customary tipping in countries like the USA, Egypt and some parts of Europe. They will also often pay over the odds by not knowing expected tip requirements - and if it's required at all. For example, over 40% of Brits think it is customary to leave a tip in Italy. Many therefore could have tipped unnecessarily in Italian restaurants as tips are not expected in this country for standard service."
The research also reveals that during these recessionary times, one in ten Brits will be staying 'tight tipped' this summer admitting they are less likely to tip due to the recession.
For those Brits travelling this summer and looking to keep a careful eye on their cash flow, M&S Travel Money has launched a free online Tip Advisor Guide which details global tipping etiquette, clearly highlighting who and when to tip and listing regional expectations and tip recommendations to help avoid unnecessary expenditure.
James Yerkess added: "It will prove a valuable cash saving travel tool for roaming Brits this summer - at no cost whatsoever."
British Airways launches online comparison tool
Richard Tams, head of UK & Ireland sales at British Airways, said: "With BA, the price you see is the price you pay. It's been well documented that some of the no-frills carriers charge for a range of 'extras' that we consider to be part of our core service, from checking in a bag to food and drinks on board. We're just making these transparent for customers.
"On a round trip customers can be paying up to £375 on Ryanair and £79 on EasyJet for these 'extras' in addition to their fare. We think people will be pleasantly surprised when they see what great value our fares offer. The no frills carriers claim they're always cheaper. Our calculator shows they are not."
The British Airways value calculator can be customised depending on how the customer is planning to travel. The system enables customers to select the various features they want for their flights - such as checking in at the airport or online, selecting a seat 24-hours before they fly, choosing the size of hold luggage they are taking, or opting for food and drink on board. It also compares the prices depending on the type of card used to make the payment and the size of hand luggage allowed on. It will then calculate what Ryanair, EasyJet and BA will charge in total for those options.
With extra charges of £375 possible on some combinations with Ryanair, British Airways are looking to make passengers aware that while the price BA advertises is the price paid by the customer, 'no frills' airlines often charge extra hidden costs.

Iceland ProTravel sees massive increase in self drive breaks around Iceland
Coupled with the fact that the average price of petrol is currently lower in Iceland than in the UK, Iceland ProTravel has been recommending a self drive holiday for travellers who are yet to make up their mind about where to go.
Having recently taken top spot in the annual 'Best Value Holiday Destinations' report carried out by the Post Office, {{Iceland is expected to see even greater interest as a holiday destination}}. In response, Iceland's main airline is increasing its number of flights from the UK to Iceland in September 2009.
As the pound continues to lose value against the euro, there are only three countries in Europe where UK tourists can expect a favourable exchange rate: Iceland, Hungary and Poland.
Eli Masson, general manager of Iceland ProTravel, said: "We recommend to our clients that they go to Iceland this summer and autumn because of the favourable exchange rate.
"On our self drive tours we find that all our clients this summer have over budgeted their spending money. One pound will get you 209 krona now, but 18 months ago you would only get 130.
"We feel that the interest in Iceland has increased a lot and we have seen that numbers of people travelling there has doubled from last year."
While most visitors to Iceland travel to the capital - and many more expected to be in Reykjavik for the city's marathon in August - Iceland ProTravel is recommending more people make Iceland breaks and look into car rental in order to explore the savings and the full length and breadth of Iceland.
Flights from Iceland take three hours from London. Flights to Reykjavik are also available from Manchester, with Glasgow flights planned for later in the year.

Low cost airlines? Not as low as you'd think, points out APH
The table compares the extra costs imposed by Ryanair, easyJet, flybe.com, bmibaby.com, Jet2.com and Thomson including check-in and baggage fees, costs for carrying sport and musical equipment and payment card fees. The majority of these hidden charges are unavoidable, but some can be reduced through simple things such as paying for a flight on a debit card or checking-in online.
The research found that all six airlines charge obligatory checked luggage fees, with Ryanair charging the highest baggage fee of £10 per bag, per flight when booking online and doubling this to £20 per bag, per flight when booked through the call centre or at the airport. Passengers also need to be careful with check-in fees as Jet2.com charges travellers £3 to check-in at the airport without any luggage, but increases this to £6 for one or more bags. Thomson, flybe.com and easyJet, on the other hand, offer check-in for free.
The research also found that all the airlines charge to transport sports equipment with fees starting from £15 per item, per flight with Thomson and as much as £30 - £40 per item, per flight with Ryanair. Customers who exceed the luggage allowance will also feel the sting with Ryanair charging the most at £15 per extra kilo and flybe.com charging as much as £21 for every kilo above 6kg.
The table is included on the Know Before You Go section of the APH website, helping savvy travellers with important information before they leave for holiday and tips on how to save money when abroad.
Airport Parking and Hotels Ltd has over 20 years' experience as a retailer of pre-booked airport parking and travel extras. It offers parking at 24 UK airports, ports and Eurotunnel terminals plus airport hotels packaged with parking, airport lounges, travel insurance, car hire and holiday taxis.

Hotels.com sponsors The Hotel Inspector on Five
The current series of the show follows the award-winning hotelier Alex Polizzi, and granddaughter of Lord Forte, as she visits failing hotels and bed and breakfast establishments around the country and by giving advice and suggestions tries to get their owners to reform them into profitable ventures.
The new spots will build on Hotels.com's existing advertising creative, made by agency Lambie Nairn, which aims to bring the brand to life for travellers. The consumer benefit of the fact that Hotels.com has hundreds of its own 'hotel inspectors' who personally review hotels for the website will be brought to life in the campaign - making it the only destination for travellers in search of the perfect room, whatever the break.
The spots will feature a range of destination references as Hotels.com helps inspire those looking for summer sun hotels.
Matt Walls, Marketing Director at Hotels.com, said: "As well as offering exposure to a core audience interested in travel, The Hotel Inspector is exactly the right fit for us. We have one of the largest teams of hotel inspectors in the industry who personally review and recommend rooms for our customers, so the association with the programme is spot on."

Stena Line reports high-salaried urbanites boosting traffic across North Sea
The new trend-bucking figures show a year-on-year increase for January to June 2009 on the Stena Line dutchflyer service across the North Sea. This success has however not been confined to just the last 12 months. The dutchflyer service, which comprises rail travel to Harwich from London Liverpool St and East Anglian railway stations, combined with ferry crossing to the Hook of Holland and onward travel to any station in Holland, has been experiencing increasing popularity across the last few years. Stena Line reported 39 per cent annual growth in dutchflyer traffic between 2007 and 2008.
The success of the dutchflyer rail and sail package comes against the backdrop of a 2.8 per cent year-on-year decline in passengers leaving the UK out of BAA's seven airports, Eurotunnel's 15.8 per cent dip and a 5.3 per cent decrease in English Channel ferry traffic from 2007 to 2008.
While previously, travellers using Stena Line's dutchflyer service had been predominantly cash-poor students and backpackers, Experian 'Mosaic' research to identify and categorise those currently using dutchflyer recognised that 26.71 per cent fell into the 'urban intelligence' group, which subdivides into two main types of traveller:
- Counter cultural mix - young, well informed professionals; trendy city dwellers
- City adventurers - 20-something high-flying singles with pressurised, high-salary jobs; often London-based
Lars Olsson, Stena Line's commercial manager for travel on the North Sea, said, "The rising popularity of Stena Lines rail and sail service over the past year has been a significant trend in itself, but it's interesting to note that the main travellers contributing towards dutchflyer's growth are now young, trendy city-dwellers and ambitious, workaholic singles.
"These groups have started considering alternatives to air travel because they're less cash-rich and even more time-poor than in the past, so the overcrowded chaos at airports and exorbitant departure taxes are deterrents. The dutchflyer service links London and East Anglia with Dutch cities via rail stations and ferry decks from £35 one-way.
"We're seeing a particular increase in dutchflyer passengers taking the overnight ferries so that they arrive at their end destination early the next morning without having had to pay accommodation costs in euros or endure 4am check-in for a flight".

The Flamingo Oasis this summer introduced an adults-only section – the Club Room, with a rooftop terrace and pool offering waiter service, plus a Clubhouse Lounge. Although the main hotel is very much family friendly, this small oasis of calm is a great way to escape it all. Thomson offers seven night holidays in Costa Blanca from £451 per person
Greece and Cyprus are known for beautiful weather, stunning beaches and fascinating history, all of which attracts couples, groups and families alike. Superbreak reveals growing trend towards London nano breaks
Currently one of the travel industry's buzz words, the nano break (or micro break as it is also known) is a one night stay where people try and pack as much into to a visit as possible. Seen by many as a money saving alternative to longer holidays or trips abroad during the economic downturn, the nano break is adding to the popularity of many 5 star hotels in London, as well as the city itself.
Ray Jones, marketing director at Superbreak commented: "With budgets tight and time short due to work pressures, we have seen a significant increase in people booking one night trips to budget hotels in London. Whilst those who live further away in cities such as the Cardiff, Newcastle and Edinburgh continue to come for the traditional two or three night short break, those who live a little closer can easily visit for one night. Clients are snapping up hotel bargains. London seems to be the destination of choice simply because there are so many things to do and a lot of it is free of charge."
Superbreak offer over 150 low-cost London hotels with value add-ons including rides on the London Eye, tickets to all top West End shows, rock and pop packages at the O2 Arena and optional rail travel from all UK mainline stations.
Gibraltar Ocean Festival Comes To Ocean Village
Brian Stevendale, Sales & Marketing Director for Ocean Village, explains, “Ocean Village lends itself perfectly to the Gibraltar Ocean Festival as the marina is modern, stylish, compact, thronging with bars and restaurants and also home to the Rock’s only casino. Furthermore it couldn’t be more strategically located. Morocco’s Marina Smir, the destination for our Day Rally, is just 25 miles south of Gibraltar yet offers an authentic North African experience. This Ocean Festival will bring a fantastic atmosphere to the waterfront venue and show that Gibraltar is the ‘in’ place to be this summer – and for many more summers to come.”
In conjunction with SG Hambros Private Banking, the Gibraltar Ocean Festival kicks off on Wednesday 19 August with a champagne reception held by the sponsors. Classical music with a pianist and orchestra will provide a sophisticated ambience for the evening. Thursday is the Day Rally to Morocco with SG Hambros providing the traditional Moroccan lunch in Smir. Later on, back on the Rock, a charity fashion show will sashay down the catwalk on Ocean Village’s Leisure Island. Friday offers free time, a seminar on Gibraltar’s unique appeal and a funky summer charity party with live music til late. Saturday brings a Yacht Poker Run – Gibraltar style – and a rock party featuring local bands will round off the festival with panache. Yacht owners can leave at their leisure on Sunday.
Davina Palermo from SG Hambros in Gibraltar is keen to support the event, “With our strong connections with the marine sector and an increasing commitment to charitable causes, we are very happy to be supporting the Gibraltar Ocean Festival and welcome new and old visitors to the Rock.”
Packages are available from just £430 (516 Euros) for a yacht up to 12 metres to include berthing for the duration of the Gibraltar Ocean Festival, two tickets for each of the classical concert, charity fashion show, summer party and rock party. This fee also covers lunch in Morocco and entrance for the Yacht Poker Run.
To book a Gibraltar Ocean Festival package contact the organisers on info@gibraltarboatshow.com or call the Ocean Village marina office on 00 350 200 73300. Availability is limited.

Superbreak encourages Michael Jackson fans to still head to London
Superbreak offered full refunds to fans who had booked a hotel in London to see Michael Jackson following the singer's death but the company expect many ticket holders to come to London anyway, and enjoy other events on offer.
Ray Jones, marketing director at Superbreak commented: "The sad loss of Michael Jackson was a shock to us all. Many people will have planned to come to the Capital for a few days and take in the show and I urge them to still visit. There has been much debate as to what will replace his shows at the O2 and as yet this is unknown. There are rumours of a memorial concert in London and if this does take place, then I would expect fans to snap tickets up as well as West End London hotels. However, Madame Tussauds has unveiled his new wax model and I wouldn’t be surprised if other tributes to him are developed going forward."
The new Michael Jackson figure recently unveiled in the music zone of Madame Tussauds was originally created to mark Jackson’s return to the live stage but is now a fitting tribute. This is the 13th time the singer has been portrayed, making him the most featured star ever at Madame Tussauds.
Superbreak has also suggested that Jackson fans enjoy a London theatre break to see a performance of the "Thriller - Live" show, a stage and video spectacular that charts the history of Michael Jackson's contributions to the world of music, featuring 20 performers and over two hours of hits.
The O2 Arena will continue to promote a number of musical events this season, including the British Music Experience, a permanent, interactive exhibition dedicated to the history of popular music in Britain. Using state-of-the-art effects it will show how rock, pop, dance and many other genres were formed and have influenced the last 60 years of British Culture. Performances from bands such as Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails and, American R&B star, Ne-Yo are also scheduled for the O2 in the coming weeks, leaving music fans with multiple options for musical entertainment when they arrive in London.
Superbreak offer a range of hotels near London including packages to all the above which combine overnight accommodation with tickets to the show or attraction.

Stagecoach expands Icomera Wi-Fi on board UK bus fleets
Icomera AB, the world’s leading provider of cellular broadband gateways, has announced that Stagecoach Group plc, one of the UK's largest transport operators, has expanded its in-vehicle Wi-Fi services for passengers across multiple fleets in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Wales. Stagecoach already utilizes Icomera's award-winning Moovbox M200 Mobile Broadband Gateway to provide mobile Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity to passengers at speeds up to several megabits per second on bus services in London, Oxfordshire and Scotland.
As part of a Government-funded £116m scheme to bring better transportation to Cambridgeshire, Stagecoach has launched a fleet of twenty new state-of-the-art vehicles to operate on the longest and greenest guided busway in the world. Commissioned by Cambridgeshire County Council, the 25km (16 mile) guided busway will provide a frequent, reliable, sustainable and attractive public transport alternative to driving between St Ives and Cambridge.
"This is a major investment by Stagecoach in a project that we believe will bring significant economic, transport and environmental benefits to the Cambridgeshire region," said Les Warneford, Managing Director of Stagecoach UK Bus. "The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway will improve access to jobs, education, healthcare and shopping for local people. By using 100% biofuel and equipping the vehicles with hi-spec features such as leather seats and Wi-Fi, we believe we will be able to attract current car users to a significantly greener, smarter travel option.”
Concurrently Stagecoach has invested over £3.5m in seventeen new Moovbox-equipped coaches on the X5 route servicing towns between Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Oxford. "The new coaches boast greener engines, leather seats, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, air-conditioning and access for wheelchair users", said Tony Cox, Managing Director of Stagecoach East. "Commuters will love the free Wi-Fi and power sockets, meaning they can start work as soon as they get on the coach."
In South Wales, Stagecoach has launched a new £2m fleet equipped with Wi-Fi Internet access to allow passengers to check their e-mails and surf the web. The seventeen ADL/MAN Enviro 300 buses hi-tech buses will operate the X4 service from Hereford to Cardiff via Abergavenny, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Pontypridd, with Internet access provided by the Icomera Moovbox available throughout the journey.
The Moovbox M200 Mobile Broadband Gateway acts as a bridge between a vehicle and high-speed cellular data networks including 3G/HSPA, EV-DO and WiMAX, providing Wi-Fi access and an Ethernet-based local area network (LAN) for connecting on-board systems such as CCTV and passenger information systems. The M200 also has integrated GPS receiver for real-time automatic vehicle location (AVL) via the web-based MoovManage service. Stagecoach will be utilizing the Vodafone's next-generation HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) 3G network to provide Moovbox connectivity.

It's all Greek to British Holidaymakers - On the Beach
With the holiday season in full swing, and as millions of Brits head to sunnier climes, On the Beach asked 1,000 holidaymakers how they adapt to local culture whilst abroad.
The survey revealed that only a meagre 9% of holidaymakers can converse fully with the locals with 18% saying they could ‘get by’ in a foreign language.
However, it would appear that British holidaymakers are a tad embarrassed by their lack of foreign language skills with 97% admitting they should be making more of an effort. The remaining 3% stated that as they only travel once a year, they don’t feel they need to bother making the effort to learn.
However, what the majority of holidaymakers lack in foreign language skills, they make up for in their enthusiasm to immerse themselves in foreign cultures.
It would appear that the once famous ‘Brit abroad’ tag seems to be diminishing.
Typical British boozers abroad are no longer favourite watering holes amongst holidaymakers, with 87% opting for nights out in traditional local bars instead. Only the remaining 13% admit to partying only in traditional British pubs abroad.
The survey also revealed that the British palate has become more sophisticated over the years with more and more people willing to try new and exotic menus. Of those surveyed, 47% said they favoured local traditional restaurants with only 6% saying they stick to British fare.
Gone are the days when Brits only mix with other Brits whilst on holiday; 91% of those surveyed stated they enjoy mixing with the locals.
Further evidence that the British holidaymaker is keener than ever to experience other cultures can be seen when asked about their choice of hotel. Only 19% said they booked recognised international hotels this summer, with 81% opting for local family run establishments.
Simon Cooper, Chief Executive Officer at On the Beach said, “The survey shows that we behind many of our our European neighbours comes to learning new languages. Not only can it be very useful, the locals really do appreciate it when foreigners make the effort. However, it is good to see that British holidaymakers are becoming more open to different cultures. Many of the most popular holiday destinations including Spain and Turkey have a wonderful rich history and taking time to explore other cultures can only add to the overall holiday experience.”
Safety instructions? Childs' play with Thompson!
An industry first in UK aviation, this innovative new safety film features a group of children talking passengers through the ins-and-outs of emergency exits, oxygen masks and lifejackets. Children were used for their charm and ‘ahh factor’ with the aim of ensuring that passenger engagement remains high throughout the entire safety video.
This fresh approach stands out against many current onboard safety videos which are viewed by passengers as mundane, old, tired and boring. In fact, research conducted by the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) in 2006 found that 54% of passengers did not watch the in-flight safety video in its entirety.
Carl Gissing, Director of Customer Services at Thomson Airways, comments, “The safety and security of our customers has always been our number one priority. The creative style of this new film demonstrates our commitment to communicating important safety instructions in a way which maximises audience engagement. By adopting a somewhat quirky approach to a mandatory airline safety briefing, we believe that we will achieve increased levels of attention from our customers – and any subsequent debate that arises over in-flight safety can only be a good thing.”
Conducting its own research into the merits of the new and improved safety video, Thomson found that there was a:
· 15% increase in the number of passengers who paid full attention to the video;
· 66% increase in the number of passengers who felt that the new film made them feel more safe;
· 333% growth in the number of passengers who engaged with the video; and
· 91% increase in the number of children under the age of 12 who watched the entire video until the end.
The new safety video has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority and will feature on all short and mid-haul Thomson flights from Monday 13 July 2009. The final phase will be the roll-out of the new video on all long-haul routes from September 2009.

Best Western has a doggedly good idea
Tails are wagging with glee at Best Western Hotels across the UK as the group opens its doors with a fanfare of new features being introduced for man's best friend in order to cope with the 150% increase in dog bookings seen over the past year.
Dogs at several hotels now have their own room service - tentatively titled 'Groom' Service - and even enjoy luxury fine dining from their own in-house canine-menu, including delicious items like specially sourced marrow bone and select cuts of free range chicken and rump steak.
Best Western hotels have long been popular with dog owners and their pampered pooches but in the last 12 months the group has seen a huge increase in the number of dog owners seeking suitable accommodation for themselves and their loyal four-legged friends. As a result several hotels within the group, which has won awards for its Pet Friendliness, devised a number of canine-centric new features designed to make guest pooches feel even more pampered.
One of these is the inclusion of special dog-beds, available on request. Owners can now book a twin room with a bed for themselves and a custom doggy-divan for their canine companion. Doggie treats on the pillow and walks specially devised for those with short, medium and long legs are another special feature at the Best Western Monkbar hotel in York.
Pet friendly hotels, are dedicating rooms specifically for guests with dogs and other rooms which are never used to accommodate pets, plus investing in the latest vacuum cleaners designed specifically to cope with pet hairs. For example, one Leeds hotel, the Best Western Dower House, has four rooms with direct access to the hotel gardens.
June Nelsey, general manager of the Best Western Monkbar Hotel, said: "Many people cherish their pets as part of the family, as dog owners ourselves we understand that people don't like to leave their pets at home and want their pet to have as good experience as they do while away.
"We even offer our seven year old Labrador to guests who miss their own pet and want a dog to walk. He has even had dog chews sent from Australia and doggie gifts from America to say thanks for a great holiday."
Clarissa Baldwin, Chief Executive of Dogs Trust, said: "Dogs love a change of scenery just like anyone else so we are very pleased that dog-owners are increasingly choosing to holiday with their canine chums. Boarding kennels are not necessarily ideal for every pet and some, like the very old, very timid, or animals that have spent time in a Rehoming Centre may find it a stressful experience and, where possible, would be far happier joining you on your break."
Best Western spokesman, Chris Webb, added: "There's been a huge uptake of rooms by dog owners and their pets in the last 12 months. In order to accommodate this increase we are investing in lots of new features to make sure our guests, and their four-legged best friends, are well catered for. We want to make sure that the pooches tails are wagging as much at our hotels as they do at home."

Hotels.com reveals the increasing popularity of minimoons
The Hotels.com poll of 'Wedding Ideas' magazine readers found that over three-quarters (77%) of couples are planning to take a honeymoon lasting less than two weeks. In fact, 30% are planning to go away for just one week or under. This group of 'minimooners' said budget constraints (74%) and worries about work commitments (56%) dictated the shorter length of their holiday.
It is not only the length of stay that is changing; the research found that couples are flexible about when they leave for their honeymoon. Whilst 57% of those questioned plan to head off straight after their wedding, over a quarter (28%) are considering waiting for a few weeks or months after the wedding before they go away and a further quarter (26%) said they would be happy to take a short break after the wedding and wait until they have the money for a longer holiday.
Honeymoon spend reflects this trend, with the majority of those surveyed (27%) saying they will spend between £500 and £1000 per person on their honeymoon, while one in five (19%) are planning to spend just £500 per person or under (£1000 in total). However, some couples will still splash out - 17% are planning to spend more than £2,000 per person on their perfect honeymoon.
The research found that while 54% of those questioned plan to go on a long haul post wedding trip, a growing number are planning to steer away from the traditional honeymoon beach destinations of Mauritius and the Maldives, and instead opt for holidays closer to home. While 18% are planning to go to mid-haul destinations such as Egypt, Turkey or Morocco, a further 19% will honeymoon in Europe and 9% are planning a UK break.
Beach and city breaks are the most popular honeymoon of choice, with a quarter of Brits (25%) choosing to combine culture and sunshine over a classic beach holiday (20%) or an exotic break (17%).
Alison Couper, Communications Director for Hotels.com, said: "A honeymoon is an important part of getting married and we're not surprised to see that people would rather downsize their trip than not go at all. Whether newlyweds decide to shorten their honeymoon to a 'minimoon' or stay the traditional fortnight but drop a hotel star rating, there are some fantastic deals to be had. There are savings of up to 50% off in the current Hotels.com summer sale, so honeymooners should take advantage."
Rachel Moschke, Editor of Wedding Ideas magazine, said: "Most of us worry about saving up for our wedding day, but it seems we're reluctant to give up the quality time together that a honeymoon offers. A 'minimoon' is the perfect way to start married life, without busting the budget."
